4. I cannot close the program in the usual way.

You are usually able to close a Windows program by clicking the 'X' in the upper right corner of the frame or a Macintosh program by clicking the close box in the upper left corner. For technical reasons, it is not possible to exit Seeing and Hearing Speech in either or those ways. Note, however, that on Windows computers the other two buttons in the upper right, which minimize and maximize (or re-size) the window, work as usual.
On Macintoshes, however, the usual zoom and collapse buttons in the upper right are not available.

5. I get a "Could not find the CD" error and cannot run the program.

This error occurs if the CD-ROM disk is not in the drive. Insert the disk in the drive and try again. The disk must be in the drive whenever you use the program.

6. There is no audio.

Check the list of possible reasons for no audio given in Appendix B and in the section entitled "Selecting Presentation Conditions" in Chapter 3 of the User Guide.

7. The audio is distorted.

If the audio sounds rough or raspy, there is a setting on Windows computers that can be adjusted to try to remove the problem. But first, exit from Seeing and Hearing Speech. Then, to get to the relevant setting from the Start menu, select Settings and then Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double click on the icon labeled "Quick Time", which will bring up the Quick Time Settings window. In that window, click on Options...
This brings up a small window in which you can adjust a setting called the fifo size.

You will see the current setting in the box. Change this number, by clicking on the number box and then editing, to make it twice the current setting. Click OK, and then close the Quick Time Settings window and the Control Panel. Go back and try Seeing and Hearing Speech again. If this has not solved the problem, go through these steps again and double the fifo size a second time. If this does not cure the audio distortion problem by the time the fifo size reaches 200, it will not be solved by this method.

8. My CD-ROM drive is making lots of whirring noises and I get read errors during install, and/or while running the course.

Occasionally a CD-ROM drive may not be able to read the disc. This can be due to the drives age, a mechanical problem, or a faulty disc. We have had a few reports of faulty discs. If you believe you have a bad disc, please contact us at (781) 399-0858 Ext. 235.

9. I get errors while trying to install/run Seeing and Hearing Speech on Windows 2000/XP

On operating systems based on NT 5 (Windows 2000 and Windows XP) it is necessary to log in as an administrator to properly install Seeing and Hearing Speech. While installing as a Power User may appear to succeed, in fact the program will not be correctly installed. Note: On Windows XP all user accounts other than Limited Users normally have administrator privileges and may be used to install Seeing and Hearing Speech.

11. Does Seeing and Hearing Speech run on Windows 7?

Yes.

12. Does Seeing and Hearing Speech run on Macs? I thought it was a Mac

Yes and no. Seeing and Hearing Speech will run natively on older Macs running OS9 and below. It is not directly compatible with OSX. Some Macintosh computers will allow you to run OS9 or "Classic" software from OSX, but newer Intel-based Macs do not support this feature. If you are running a Mac with an Intel processor, or if you are running any Mac with OSX Leopard, Seeing and Hearing Speech will not run natively on your machine.

Because of the confusion and many incompatibilities, we have discontinued selling Seeing and Hearing Speech as a Mac product. That said, you can easily run the Windows version of Seeing and Hearing Speech on a Mac running either Apple's Boot Camp (free with OSX 10.5 Leopard and above) or SWsoft's Parallels. Here is more information on Boot Camp and Parallels. Note: You will need to own a copy of the Windows XP or Vista installer, or buy one, to run Windows using Boot Camp or Parallels.
